Lion City - Singapore

Singapore was a great experience for the whole family. Constantin wanted to see it and so we planned it early in the trip.

The first thing that strikes you and this might be a cliche; is the order. Everything is well organised, little to no queues at the airport or anywhere else for that matter. Time is time, no cheating no overcharge etc. It is very comfortable to visit Singapore ... but expensive!

During our time in Singapore we visited the zoo of course where the highlight was feeding the elephants.

We also did a lot of the other tourist things such as watching the beautiful water show at the Marina Bay once from land and a second time from a boat in the bay itself.

We relaxed at the Gardens with lights and music at the Supertree Grove. We visited Chinatown and ate great fried rice there.

We also paid a visit to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. The only regret there is that while we were visiting the Singapore Air Force was conducting some kind of exercise over our heads and they were flying low with their fighter jets... it was low enough for the noise to be absolutely deafening...and I was stuck inside with a tooth that supposedly belonged to The Buddha!

We also met up again with old friends, Loveena from my primary school whom I hadn’t seen for 20 years. She now has a beautiful family: husband Ashvin, eldest son Quian and twin girls Enya and Yena. It was very nice to meet up them over dinner and we spent a very nice evening. 

The following day was Eid or Hari Raya as it is more commonly known in this part of the world. It was a public holiday in Singapore and we met again Ling, David and their boy Luca. We had met on Telunas island and it was great for the girls to see Luca and Ling again!

On that day of celebrations, we enjoyed the waterplay at the Gardens by the Bay. The kids had a lot of fun.

Meanwhile Roxana, Constantin and myself went to the Flower Dome: 2 huge structures with an interior jungle in one and huge gardens in the other one. Very impressive!

All in all Singapore was, as expected, impressive and we got what we came for.

With our Australian adventures drawing to an end we started feeling a little bit of sorrow. That meant we were soon to go home. However we still had one last chance to squeeze out the last few drops of fun and excitement from our three months long voyage. Port Douglas

We landed in Cairns airport early morning, picked up a rental car and headed to Port Douglas, a quaint little town about one hour's drive North.  Road from Cairns to Port Douglas from a lookout - beautiful The drive to Port Douglas is gorgeous with a 20 kilometers section of the James Cook highway classified as UNESCO world heritage. It was spectacular.  We got there and checked in our bungalow. It was self contained and very comfortable.  Race winner is no3. - we tipped it! Over the next days we did quite a few amazing things. One of them was attending the Cairns Cup at the Cairns racecourse. It was really beautiful and everyone had dressed up for the occasion, except us obviously ... We had a great day and almost broke even from a gambling point of view. Day 0 - The Departure

The day we had both eagerly awaited and dreaded finally arrived. We had prepared (well, Roxana did all the heavy lifting to be honest) and were ready to hit the road.  Her dad had come to Brussels a few days earlier and we made our way to the airport. It was not busy at all in Brussels and we cleared security in no time. The flight to London went fast (about 1 hour) ... then, once in Heathrow it took us longer to transfer from T5 to T4! After an expensive but good dinner, we boarded the Malaysian Airlines Airbus A350 that would take us to Kuala Lumpur in 13.5hrs! Flight went well, plane was comfortable enough and most importantly the girls slept at least half of the trip - alleluia :-) A befitting setting for the onset of our trip South East Asia comes with a lot of promises : Hot and humid, beautiful beaches, lush jungles, strange animals, delicious street food, majestic temples, never ending traffic jams, air pollution all blended in an experience we hope we will neve...
